What is Therapy

The term therapy is a general term and can be used to describe either counselling or psychotherapy. These two terms are often used interchangeably but simply put the term ‘counselling’ refers to a period of short term work (between 4 and 12 sessions) which will often be focused on one specific issue. With that said, counselling can take place over longer periods so really it is a matter of personal preference and I provide short and long-term counselling.

In contrast ‘psychotherapy’ is work that almost always continues over a longer period (months or even years) which allows the therapist and client to work on more than one specific issue, often looking at life from as far back as childhood.

What is important to remember is that both an opportunity for you to talk in a safe, supportive and confidential space. You can explore anything that’s on your mind whilst being listened to, free from judgement and ridicule.

What can make reaching out to someone difficult is that there are many differing styles of therapy and it can be difficult in deciding which style is right for you. We must not forget that therapy is a very personal process which requires trust and therefore you need to find someone you feel you can work with.

If you are unsure of who to choose, or what style of therapy is right for you, here at James Penney Therapy I can offer you the opportunity to receive a bespoke approach which treats you as unique and recognises how we all view the world a little differently.
